There are several reasons for trading your old car in for one that is more eco-friendly, from limiting your carbon emissions to conserving oil in times of high petrol prices. However, there are ways to get yourself in a green automobile responsibly both as a consumer and friend of the environment.

For example, consider that hybrid and electrical vehicles are relatively expensive. Therefore, if you choose to buy that type of car, it is important you receive the most money for your old car. Use a company that provides car valuations so you are certain the dealer is giving you the best deal.

When purchasing an eco-friendly car, you want to be sure the km/l figure listed is correct. Most car makers reach that number through highly controlled tests that do not reflect the driving experience in the real world. While the sticker says a truck gets close to 30 km/l, in reality it is likely only 20 km/l. To find the real fuel efficiency of a car, look for independent studies or tests conducted by auto publications or organizations.

And to take the extra step as a green driver, be certain your old car will no longer be on the road by scraping it. Junkyards and recycling plants always accept used vehicles for their various metal and glass parts. Plus, you won’t leave empty-handed. You may not think, “I can get paid to scrap my car” but it’s true. Just find the nearest recycling site near you and ask for an offer.

Due to the increase in the cost of gas, the popularity of electric vehicles is growing. Many people are starting to care a great deal about their environment and what they are leaving for future generations. By making sure that we are responsible stewards over the resources we have, we are helping to make sure those resources will still be available to the next generation.

Many people want to recycle or sell their old, out-dated vehicles fast, but they are not sure how they can do that. They often wonder, “What are used car prices?,” but they do not want to have to deal with placing ads, or trying to convince a dealer to give them the best deal. You can find out how much a local dealer is willing to pay for your vehicle fast and easy with an online car valuations tool. Once you get your quote, you can decide if you want to sell your vehicle.

Many people choose to sell their vehicles after getting the online car valuations because they will soon have a good-sized down payment for the new electric vehicle they want. It is a fast and easy way to position yourself financially to get the car that you really want.

If you are thinking about getting rid of your old car, you should check out this online tool and see just how much of a down payment you can get towards the electric car of your dreams. You will be glad that you did.

Most people don’t realize the amount of energy they waste in their homes daily. Most consumers could save a bundle on their power bills while benefiting the environment by taking a few, simple steps.

Heating and cooling our homes is the number one use of energy for most people. Adjusting your thermostat just a few degrees can use far less energy. When the weather is mild, open windows and turn off the thermostat. Sometimes it is only necessary to run the central unit during the hottest part of day or the coolest nights.

The clothes dryer is sometimes our next big energy hog. It’s easy to toss everything from the washing machine into the dryer, but hanging some items to dry saves energy and reduces wear and tear on clothes. Hanging jeans, shirts and blouses and using the dryer only for underwear, socks and towels can allow you to reduce heat and drying times, and that saves energy.

Washing clothes in cold water saves energy and is better for most laundry. Be sure to only run your dryer as hot and as long as necessary to dry clothes. Using high heat and the maximum time isn’t always necessary.

Wait to run your dishwasher until it’s completely full. Rinse dishes in cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Cold water doesn’t use energy in the hot water heater, so any time you can use cold water instead of warm or hot you save energy. If hand washing dishes, use a sink stopper instead of running hot water the entire time you’re washing.

When watching TV, little or no additional lights may be necessary. Even fluorescent lighting burns some energy. During the day, open curtains and blinds for natural lighting. If privacy is an issue, sheer curtains will let in light and give you some privacy.

Pollution today is probably one of the most-frequently-used words in the world. It is a word used by those who know the meaning of pollution to those who use it just for the “heck” of it, from small children to leaders of nations. But then, what is pollution? Why is the word gaining in popularity? Well firstly, pollution is the contamination of the natural environment by synthetically produced contaminants that affect the ecosystem. Secondly, it is because pollution is one of the major growing concerns of the world today.

The greed of being at the top of the food chain has caused us to advance our technologies to feed our greed resulting in contaminating the natural resources. We have not spared any natural resource – be it water, air, or even land. Everything is polluted. The main reason for pollution can be credited to urbanization and industrialization. Both urbanization and industrialization have brought about waste. This waste has to be “thrown away”. So we use dump yards like allotted places (which are already brimming and over-flowing), rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.

The waste making up the landfills are usually synthetic components that degenerate releasing a lot of toxins on a very long span of time. Owing to this we have polluted our air, water and even land. This pollution is now affecting us and our next generations. We are smart at putting the blame on the others, not realizing that if we tackle our small wastes and try to check our personal pollution at home, we are doing our small part in trying to save the earth – after all every drop of water, makes the mighty ocean.

Nature conservancy and the environment aren’t just issues for the government to handle.

Your Turn to Help Out

While the government has an arduous task of making up the policies and the laws to help the environment and nature, you aren’t getting out of any work. Though these policies might help to influence the way businesses work and the way energy is created, at the end of the day, they are simply pieces of paper, not actions. Due to the wonders of bureaucracy, those great conservancy policies can stay just words for years as they are funneled though different committees, steering committees, and endless meetings. Instead of waiting for big companies to do their part, you can be a part of the conservancy process.

Putting Your Own Policies Into Place

Becoming politically active may not be on your list of things to do, but being environmentally active will be. You need to make sure that you are contributing your own methods of water conservation and other wildlife conservation ideas.

How to begin? Sitting down with your family and friends, create your own list of policies and what actions you will take to support these policies. Some of the possible policies can include:

Using less energy and resources by installing energy efficient appliances and water saving nozzles on everything in your home.

Being kind to nature when you’re out in a forest or in a national park.

Using fewer resources by purchasing recycled products or by using containers again and again.

Converting your home energy supply to something that is more renewable.

Using renewable energy and clean energy for transportation.

Nature conservancy can also be as simple as writing a child to the local nature conservancy organization, but that’s just a small step in the right direction. The actions you take at home, no matter how small, will help to change the way the world looks and the number of forests which will be left when the next generation has to think about conservancy.

The conservation of wildlife can seem more difficult in the wild forest setting.

Keeping Animals Safe

Most people know of the creatures of the forest because of Disney. And while Thumper might be cute, the animals of the forest can’t be drawn into a cartoon every day like the ones in the movies and shows. It’s up to forest stewards and others to begin to take wildlife conservancy just as important as water conservancy and other environmental issues. When one species begins to die off, it’s a sign that something else isn’t right in the environment. And when that happens, an entire ecosystem can be damaged. Though you can not control everything that happens in the forest, you can change the way you interact with animals to promote a healthier relationship.

Rules to Follow in the Forest

When you’re heading out into the forest, you will want to follow the signs as posted by those worried about conservancy issues. Some of the basic rules include:

Don’t feed the animals

Don’t touch the animals

Don’t move the animals

Don’t change the environment

Don’t litter

Be careful during low visibility hours

Report others who are harming the animals

Volunteer for clean up and wildlife restoration projects

When you stay away from the animals, you will be able to allow them to be a part of their environment, doing what they need to do in order to keep up the resources they have.

Feeding the animals only causes them to act in unnatural ways, which can lead to more environmental issues. Animals can begin to get territorial in areas where there are no natural food sources. Over time, they might begin to starve because they expect people to feed them instead of having to forage for food on their own.

In order to protect the wildlife of the forest, it’s best to just keep away from the cute animals and just take pictures of them. They can fend for themselves.

Of course, if an animal is injured, then you can talk to the park ranger, but don’t touch it on your own.

Conservation of energy policies help to conserve energy, even in the middle of a forest.

Renewable Energy Sources

Within the park system, there are a number of new ways in which energy can be conserved. Yes, one of them includes walking instead of taking a car or a bus. But many park systems realize that things are going to be much more tourist friendly if there are ways to get around which don’t involve leg work. Here are some of the ways in which energy is being conserved in parks today through the use of renewable energy sources:

Solar energy – Some parks are using solar cells to help store up energy for nighttime use in lights and signs.

Natural gas or electric transportation – These vehicles help people get from one side of the forest to the other, but they don’t use up any more energy than is absolutely necessary. And there is little if any pollution which is emitted at the same time.

Water energy – By using hydroelectric power, the parks can run completely on the energy of the world.

Stop Using Energy Unless Crucial

The best way for forest stewardship policies to help the conservation of wildlife and energy is to have the forests have limited human contact. By keeping parks open only from dawn until dusk, the natural resources can not be used up as quickly. Lights won’t be necessary at night and other resources aren’t used during these times. Limiting those who are camping in the area is another great way to help cut back on the energy usage.

Many conservation policies are more subtle, using less air conditioning in the warm months or avoiding being open during the winter when transportation is difficult anyway. By conserving energy wherever possible, the parks can maintain their beautiful appearance and the resources within the forests.

Paper recycling is a common activity. Millions of tons of paper are used every day. All this paper needs to be recycled. Considering this statistic, it is clear the amount of trees that are felled for this purpose. Environmentalists have prodded us always to use recycled paper. But people still do not prefer it. Recycled paper looks a little shabby, but it is perfectly usable.

Studies have shown that unlike glass, plastic, and aluminum, paper is the most recycled thing. When you give up your paper-waste for recycling you are actually helping the environment. Paper disposal causes landfill. By giving up paper waste for recycling you reduce miles and miles of landfill. This gives an opportunity to use the land for constructive purposes.

Offices, schools and other urban centers, have shredder. Paper is shredded to be recycled. This paper waste is collected and transferred to a recycling center. Paper waste is again categorized. Some paper waste might classify as contaminant, while some might classify as trash.

Paper waste might also include other materials that come along with it. All these materials are removed, and paper segregated from them. Paper waste is organized and made free of contamination. This clean paper-waste is then arranged into large containers and sent to a paper mill.

The paper mill uses the fiber of the paper. Mixing the fiber with water, a solid paste is made. The solid paste is cleaned. The solidity is then beaten to a semi-solid mix. From then on the original papermaking process kicks-in. So at the end of it all, you have paper made from paper. And you can use it all over again.

British scientists have hit upon an invention that could make humans create nature synthetically. Artificial trees are not real trees, but a technologically-empowered concept device that functions like a tree. It has the capability of capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In fact tons of it. This is especially beneficial when tons of carbon is being released to the atmosphere, and there aren’t enough trees to process it.

Now a real tree would not be able to capture such amounts of carbon dioxide. Artificial trees can. That’s a big difference. An artificial tree is also more expensive than a real tree. It will cost around twenty five thousand dollars apiece.

British scientists are planning to plant one hundred trees in an area. This area will be enough to remove more than half of carbon from the atmosphere around the United Kingdom. So, if this was done all around the world, we could expect minimal to no carbon in the atmosphere. The potential for the artificial tree is truly heartening. So how do they work? Artificial trees have a filter that traps carbon dioxide. These are replaceable filters. After capturing to full capacity, filters need to be replaced with new ones. Used filter will not be disposed, but stored in oil reservoirs and oil wells.

The technology of the artificial tree is bracing for a revolution. Still at the design level, very soon a real working model will come up. Then, the pressure of real trees to capture carbon is reduced. We may soon have artificial trees that also have the capacity to produce oxygen. We may never know!

If you are like most people, you are looking to conserve, recycle, and go green. The population as a whole has realized this is our world and we had better start taking care of it. The federal government has even joined the game and offers the energy efficiency tax credit. There are many ways to take advantage of this tax credit.

If you purchase a high energy appliance, it may qualify for the tax credit. These appliances will not only help you save on your energy bills but also be helpful to the environment. These include products such as wind energy systems, solar panel systems, or geothermal heat pumps.

Home improvements may also qualify. If you install insulation in your house or certain types of roofing and water heaters the credit may apply. Biomass stoves, which use biomass fuel to heat homes, qualify as well. If energy efficient skylights and windows are installed they too may qualify.

Even electric cars may qualify for the credit. The stipulation with a vehicle purchase is first purchased, first credited. The credit only applies to the first 200,000 vehicles sold and then it phases out.

Each credit is subject to its own rules and regulations. There are of course limits and stipulations just like any other tax credit.

This tax credit allows consumers to do something useful for the environment and beneficial to their pocketbooks. Be sure to take advantage of this credit if it applies to you.

Recycling is method of reusing the materials that are not easily degradable. Recycling means using the certain materials and then remaking them in a way that they can be used again.

This is an attempt to save the environment by reducing the manufacturing of the materials like plastic that cause harm to the environment. Paper is also recycled to minimise the cutting of the trees and deforestation for making paper to meet the increasing needs of the people. The plastics are the non biodegradable materials that do not decompose themselves and thus cause a lot of problems.

The plastics cannot be decomposed and thus once manufactured they require a space to be stored. The waste plastics have caused enough destruction to the environment, they block drainage system, when animals feed on them they cause fatal diseases and ultimately death for the animals. The plastic are very harmful for our environment and thus recycling the plastics is very important. The recycled plastic is same as the one manufactured. The only difference is that they are the used ones which are recycled for reuse and thus saving space for their disposal. Paper can also be recycled which helps to save trees from being cut down. With the rising population there is increase in the demand of these materials and thus to save the earth in the long run it is very important for us to adapt on the practises of recycling of materials to minimise the new manufacturing of these materials which are causing harm to the environment. There are many institutions that work on educating people about the benefits of recycling.

You’ve gone green at home by recycling and cutting back your energy use. You’ve gone green at work by only printing when necessary and using your own coffee cup instead of disposable ones. Now it’s time to go green with your charitable donations as well.

Give a Car for a Cause

Kars 4 Kids is one non-profit organization that helps you go green by recycling your old car for a good cause. In this case, recycling your car means that you donate it to charity rather than sending it to a junkyard. This keeps the car and all of its parts out of the landfill and reduces leakage into the soil of oil and other chemicals and fluids. In turn, this keeps seepage from getting into local bodies of water and even drinking water in the community.

It’s Green and Tax Deductible

When you donate your old car to a charity and recycle your old car, you are helping to provide the charity with the funds it needs for its cause. The benefits go beyond your goodwill, however, in that they also make the world a better place to live, work and play. When you take old cars out of commission, it also means that you are using up less energy (gas). This too can add some green to your wallet with the rising cost of gas.

Finally, donating your car greens your pocket because it is a tax deductible donation that allows you to get rid of your old gas guzzler, make a difference and save money in the process.

More and more people are finally opting to do their part to go green and help our environment. Research now shows that the hidden dangers that are lurking in our water, air and soil, are even worse then once thought. Although one single individual can only do so much to help, each and every tiny step taken can only help to improve the situation. Before becoming overwhelmed with the thought, there are a few tips that can help newbies to know where to begin in their own personal fight against pollution.

Researching where the greatest needs are can help each of us understand what needs to be done first and foremost. Because our drinking water has become desperately polluted, it is one of the top priorities. Families can get involved in fighting water pollution by taking an hour or so out of each weekend to simply pick up trash, that if not cleaned up, may end up in our waterways. Using caution when applying fertilizer to flower beds and gardens can also help cut back on water pollution. Properly disposing of trash, especially recyclable materials is another small step in controlling pollution that can enter our water.

Air pollution is another area that needs quick attention. Unfortunately most of the air pollutants come from large factories, which a single individual can do little about. There are a few things that we can do to help though. Planting trees and bushes can help clean up the air, along with using the car less, even if you simply join a carpool once or twice a week or combine shopping trips to different stores into one excursion.

You are probably scratching your head upon reading the title. How does an industry that thrives on taking down trees actually help the environment? It does not seem possible. Logging destroys forests, it does not help them or the environment.

The reality is much different. Logging is a business just like any other. If they were to remove all of their resources, they would go under in a short period of time. This is economics 101. A business must have something to sell in order to make money. A logging company cannot keep taking out trees at an unchecked rate and hope that there will be something to harvest down the road. Instead they use conservation techniques to keep their business alive.

It starts when a stand of trees is cut down. There is now nothing to hold the soil from eroding, which in turn creates problems such as mudslides. It also becomes more difficult for plants to gain a foothold as a rainfall can cause the soil to be washed away. To stop this from happening, private industries and government agencies employ re-foresters. These employees go into a harvested area and plant seedlings to prevent the soil from eroding. It also restores the habitat of the animals that was lost by logging. Over time these trees will be harvested again, but the cycle will always stay steady.

Villifying the logging industry is very easy to do. After all, they have an material tht is in constant demand, requiring a steady stream of trees. But the industry works with conservation efforts of all kinds, ensuring that habitats are there to stay for good. Loggers are most aware of the impact they have on the environment.

The Toyota Prius has been around for a few years now, proving that there is a demand for autos that run on battery power. But what will the future hold? Chevy has brought the Volt to the market and Nissan has its Leaf. The Leaf runs purely on battery power alone and has a limited range. The Volt is like the Prius having a gas engine married to a battery bank. Unlike the Prius, the Volt can run on battery power alone. However, it is a larger car than the Leaf and will get fewer miles out of the batteries.

It is a given that autos need to diversify their power sources and get off of using only oil. The car manufacturers are starting to respond to this need and are looking to the future by bringing consumer grade electric vehicles to market. Ethanol was promising for a while, but it has only served to drive up the price of corn and food prices. Hydrogen is the darling of alternative fuels. Unfortunately no one has been able to scale an engine to run effectively on hydrogen and it looks like it will be years before there is a practical solution.

Certainly there will be more electric vehicles coming on line in the near future. Battery technology continues to improve by extending range and shedding weight. The batteries themselves are also recyclable when they lose the ability to recharge, keeping themselves out of landfills. But the question remains to be answered; will consumers adapt to these short range vehicles in favor of not having to purchase as much gasoline? Only time will tell.

This is a mantra that is repeated over and over again. The press does it, environmentalists say it, even friends and family have jumped on the bandwagon. So why is it being said again? Simply because it can never be said enough.

Recycling is something that tends to get swept under the rug. We toss in stuff that we know can go into the correct bins and do not think about it further. Our gas tanks are filled up on a regular basis without really thinking about the whole of oil production. Our newspapers are delivered on a daily basis and not much thought is given to how many trees have been chopped down to create that paper. In a sense, we have become callous to how recycling really impacts our daily lives.

Oil is more than the gasoline that has been refined for an engine to consume. There are many petroleum byproducts that go int our day to day lives. Plastic is the biggest one. We are surrounded by plastic in many forms. The keyboard you type on regularly is made from petroleum by-products. Casings for objects like portable heaters, printers, monitors, speakers, all are made out of plastic or a resin derived from petroleum. Think about it for a moment. That is a heck of a lot of stuff made from plastic and it is in our homes, our vehicles, our workplaces. These objects play into the cost of a barrel of oil.

When looking at it that way, it makes perfect sense to pay more attention to our recyclables. Work on getting as much plastic that can be reused into the bins. Keep it out of the landfills where it will take thousands of years to degrade. Instead, keep it cycling and in use, reducing the demand for more fresh petroleum to make an object.

We take our recycling out to a bin, drop it off, and forget about it. The only amount of thought that gets put into the whole process on our end is if the item can be put in the bin or not. Putting any more effort into thinking about the process really does not occur because, well, it is still a form of garbage. As long as it is not in the house anymore and on its way elsewhere, that is all that matters. But what really happens to the items we toss?

The first part is the most obvious. A recycling truck comes and empties the cans, then takes it away. From there on, the truck heads to a sorting facility and drops their load. The trash gets onto conveyor belts where employees sort through the items and put them in appropriate containers. After sorting, the materials get baled or crushed, stacked, then shipped on to the company that purchases the contents as raw materials.

Companies that take the paper, plastics and aluminum put them through their own processes. Cleaning, soaking, shredding, melting. Whatever is necessary to get the materials to a state to start the process all over again. From here items like paper for a variety of uses is created, fresh aluminum cans are struck, and plastics find a new life as another product.

All of this is the result from simply putting specific materials in a special container. Garbage collection businesses have brought recycling to a point where we just do not think too much about it. Yet the benefits for all involved are many. The more recycling that gets done, the lower the prices become for items made from recycled content. And some materials can be used over and over again. It is a win-win situation for all involved.

When considering refinancing a loan, many people often think of the loan on their home mortgage, but there is also the option to refinance a car loan or other similar smaller loan. When a loan is refinanced, a new lender pays out the previous loan, and the money is then owed to the new lender. This is usually beneficial for those with high interest rates, as a new lender may be able to use collateral or a co-signer to recalculate the monthly payment and ultimately end up paying less interest on the total amount borrowed. This is very helpful, especially for those who find themselves in a different financial situation to when they obtained the loan, or if the borrower is close to missing one or more monthly repayments.

If even just one payment is missed, an individual’s credit score can be impacted so refinancing the loan is a way to protect this vital score. Additionally, reducing the length of time associated with the loan can positively impact a person’s credit score, as the loan will be paid off sooner. Another possible benefit associated with refinancing an auto loan is that the borrower might be able to switch the type of interest rate—a fixed rate remains the same no matter what is happening in the current economy. Choosing to make this change can help to protect against increases in interest rates which are a definite possibility when the loan is written with a variable interest rate.

A car loan refinance can be a great relief to individuals who find themselves unable to make the monthly car payment, whether due to unemployment, life changes, or just a rough financial patch. Refinancing a loan is usually only helpful earlier; once the car is almost paid off, a refinance might not help much. Reducing the amount of debt a person has can also reduce stress levels and anxiety, and leave money left over for other necessities.

In the not too distant past, recycling was a bit of a lark. It was not taken that seriously by companies and private individuals. And it was not that it was seen as a “hippie” thing to do. It had everything to do with inconvenience and cost. As a result, the thought process that went into recycling went under the radar. Technological advances and good PR changed the way everyone looks at recycling materials.

Recycling became a necessity when it was realized that landfill space was going to become scarce in the not so distant future. Companies started looking into ways to minimize how much garbage would make it into a landfill. The most visible product that came from this effort is polar fleece. Malden Mills created the material out of discarded 2-litre bottles. From a simple beginning came a whole new way of creating a functional and useful product that we now can not seem to live without. And it feels good to know that our garbage turns into an item that will be used for years on end with out filling up a landfill.

It is easy to become cynical about the whole recycling effort. After all, there are many companies that are making a profit off of what is essentially a free resource, right? Wrong. The costs for recycling may be low, but there are still costs. Separate bins need to be supplied, a separate garbage truck is sent to pick up the bins, and the contents need to be delivered to a sorting facility. So it is not without cost, but there has to be a profit involved or recycling woud not be as easy for anyone to do.

We like to recycle because it is a simpe feel good thing to do. There is a satisfaction in knowing that our garbage will not be sitting in a compost heap, taking an unknown amount of years to degrade. And when we all think about it, we need to recycle as much as possible, or the planet is eventually going to turn into one gigantic garbage dump.

Being environmentally conscious does not mean that you have to turn into a hippie and ride your bicycle all over town even in freezing conditions. While there is nothing wrong with pedaling sometimes, this is just not a realistic way to live for a lot of people. Our society is based on commuting, and for most people’s daily transportation needs a car is just as necessary as having a decent pair of shoes. However, just because you drive a car as a matter of near-necessity does not mean that you have to turn into a Captain Planet villain polluting as much as is humanly possible. Let’s take a look at a few ways on how to reduce personal carbon footprint and become a more environmentally friendly driver..

First off, remember that rolling is the best way to keep your car using its gas more efficiently. While a lot of drivers have gotten into the unfortunate habit of accelerating between stop lights (even if the stop light they are heading toward is a fresh red one), only to stop right before they get to the light. This is bad for several different reasons. For one, you are accelerating just to stop, which wastes gas and puts out more noxious fumes. For another, you are running a greater risk of being unable to stop in time and getting into an accident. Thirdly, you can simply coast, which saves your gas, your brakes, and the environment a little bit of strain.

Another way that you can be an environmentally conscious driver is to avoid idling whenever you can do so. When you idle, your engine is working for essentially nothing. For newer cars, there is no “warming up” period necessary, even in cold weather. And since new cars take only about ten seconds worth of idling to use the same amount of gas as starting, you are not save anything by allowing your car to idle for a long time, such as in heavy (non-moving) traffic. If you can, you might as well just turn off the ignition and sit tight while you wait for what’s happening to just run its course.

One more thing you can do to make sure that your personal carbon footprint is as low as possible behind the wheel is to get your engine tuned up on a regular basis. By the time the “check engine” light comes on in your car, you might already be doing damage to the poor vehicle. While you might not be able to tell what the right sounds are in your car if it is new, by the time you have had it for a year or so you should know when something is “off”; cars are notorious for giving their owners plenty of auditory warnings long before they get to a serious point of damage. If your engine light has gone on, do not wait. Unless you are on the way to the emergency room, take your car to get checked immediately.

These are just a few of the ways you can effectively reduce your negative impact on the environment while keeping access to your preferred mode of transportation.

Nothing is finer than having a deep appreciation for the automobile that you drive. It takes you to and from work, takes the kids to the soccer games and serves as a family utility vehicle.

If you’re thinking sleeker and sexier than that minivan that you promised yourself you would never purchase, a used Audi for sale is just what you’re looking for. You’ve seen the Audi in countless action movies, racing down bad guys and cruising at speeds usually reserved for race car vehicles. This high quality German car is more than just a fancy, up-tempo driving machine. It’s a quality vehicle that stands the test of time, rarely breaks down and gives you a significant upgrade from those ho-hum models that you normally stay away from.

Thinking a new Audi might be out of the family price range? A used Audi for sale can save you significant amounts of money and give you the car that you’ve always dreamed of. These modern marvels of German technology seem like they stay on the road forever, get good gas mileage and seat a family of five comfortably in most cases. If it comes time to trade that Audi in, your car is going to maintain its value and have a resale value that surprised you even five or ten years after the initial purchase.

Think your kids might want to have something more than a beat-up, old Dodge Neon for their high-school or college care, a used Audi for sale would likely hold its value and give your kids a safe and fun car to take off to college.

Don’t get trapped with a car that you absolutely don’t love. Life is too short not to play hard once in a while and the purchase of a technologically advanced Audi will give you the look and feel of a car that fits the bill in so many ways.

The latest wave of Republican governors saw them making what they felt were the right choices in rejecting federal funds for high-speed rail. With these refusals comes all kinds of justifications for their decisions. Some make sense on the surface such as having to fund the operation of the rail with state money after the rails are finished. With state governments running on fumes, it makes sense to not want to add more burden to the budgets. But when taking a look at the future, the refusal to introduce high speed rail into the states is a major mistake for everyone involved.

It is long proven that public works create jobs and good ones at that. The jobs will still be there after the initial construction has been completed as well. The ultimate benefit to building high speed rail corridors is to the environment. Getting cars off of the roadways means that there is less pollution overall. There is also less gasoline consumption, which has long reaching benefits to the environment through less pumping, shipping and refinement.

Take a look at how Governor Christie screwed things up for the area between New York City and New Jersey. High speed rail would have taken hundreds of cars off of the streets on a daily basis, lessening traffic jams and smoothing out the traffic issues that currently plague these two states. However, in his desire to pander to his party, he turned down the funds in a grandstanding gesture that will benefit no one in the long run.

High speed rail is a sure bet when it comes to reducing gridlock and pollution in our major population centers. The benefits far outweigh the initial nuisance of getting them constructed. But it would seem that governors seem to share the short attention span of the voters that put them into office. They think they are saving money now, when in reality they are costing their state untold dollars long after they are out of office.

If you’re wondering what to do with all the candy from the last holiday, put it to use protecting the environment. Neighborhood kids will line up at your door hauling trash.

Decide on a good day and time for weather, school and other activities with neighborhood parents. Announce it with flyers on doors or by word of mouth. You might even put up a poster at neighborhood entrances.

Before the event, put the candy or other prize items in gift bags. Even sandwich bags will work. You can assemble different sizes for different awards if you choose.

Have plenty of gloves (small latex are good for kids and pretty cheap) and garbage bags. Have the kids meet you in your front yard at the appointed time and announce that prizes will be given. Consider awards for the most bags of garbage and the hardest worker.

Have markers on hand to mark names on the garbage bags so you can total them for awards. Provide a place to wash up and hand sanitizer. Make sure that other parents or neighborhood teenagers are available to supervise children around streets or other potentially dangerous areas. If you wish, set a time limit.

As the kids bring the full bags of garbage, mark their names on the bags. When all the kids are finished, total the bags and give out awards.

Some waste management companies will provide free bins and removal for neighborhood programs such as this. Call ahead and see what they can offer. This strategy can be used to clean up your neighborhood, camping and picnicking areas or local parks. Remember: keeping the kids safe during this activity is the most important thing.

Proponents of zero waste look at garbage as a resource, not waste. Community initiatives are promoting these core values. Community and industry efforts to reduce or even eliminate landfill waste have made huge strides in environmental efforts.

The Zero Waste Alliance is working with business, communities and the government to implement policies that will utilize resources we are throwing away. As land for landfills decreases and our waste products increase, something has to be done.

Their goal is to completely eliminate the word “waste.” They want everyone to see our waste products as another renewable resource in our environment. What we are filling landfills with today will be a gold mine of resources tomorrow.

Communities, businesses, schools and homes are all jumping aboard. Part of the solution is consuming less. Americans buy many unnecessary products each year, and buy much more than what they need. The first step to reducing and eliminating waste starts before you buy.

Government regulations can’t be the only thing we rely on to eliminate waste and preserve the environment. Individuals and private enterprise has to do their share. San Francisco is now recovering 77% of their waste products. Their goal is to be waste free by the year 2020. Los Angeles’ goal is 2030.

Waste products also include toxins. Toxins put in landfills end up in the water supply and food chain. Recent studies have shown that measurable amounts of prescription medicines have found their way into the water supply through sewer systems.

Government funds are available in many areas to help businesses implement greener policies.

Builders are discovering that green designs don’t only impact the environment; they can help the bottom line. New building designs, from office space to manufacturing plants, are using net zero energy and producing as little as zero waste materials.

Once thought too pricy, eliminating energy and disposal costs means more profits. For business owners, this is a must.

The Commercial Building Initiative (CBI) is one way the US Department of Energy is seeking to make buildings, old and new, more energy efficient. Businesses and hospitals are teaming with CBI. Commercial involvement is important because 18% of the energy used is commercial.

The healthcare industry can certainly benefit from lower energy bills, as healthcare costs soar. Hospital Corporation of America, Kaiser Permanente, the US Department of Veteran Affairs and Catholic Healthcare West are just a few of the hospitals partnering with CBI.

Rising retail costs have prompted many retailers to begin reducing energy costs. Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Bust Buy, Lowes, JCPenney and Target are just a few of the retailers who have partnered with CBI to reduce energy costs associated with heating and cooling, refrigerated display cases, lighting and other energy uses.

Net zero energy means that a building produces as much or more energy as it consumes, eliminating the need for public power dependence. The newest office designs produce several hours more energy than they use each day.

Homes can also be built with these technologies. Natural light and plant life and are utilized and heat producing electronics like computers can generate heat for the entire building. The National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado is a wonderful example of this practice.

The BP oil spill crippled tourism on the Gulf Coast last year, but business hope to make up for it this year. Cities along the coast say that cleanup is complete and the beaches are safe again.

Last year, an oil rig owned by British Petroleum (BP) dumped billions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The largest industries in the region – fishing and tourism – were halted due to environmental and health concerns.

After BP and the US government spent billions of dollars and several months stopping the leak and cleaning the spill, Gulf hotels, restaurants and fisheries are ready to get back to business.

Kenneth Feinberg has been put in charge of allotting money to those businesses and individuals affected by the oil spill. Victims say his payoff estimates are too low, BP claims they are too high. Most small business owners are just hoping to have a better season this year.

A large number of the businesses on the Gulf Coast depend on charter boats, gulf seafood and families who want to play on the beach for their success. Owners of hotels, restaurants and gas stations depend on their spring to fall tourist season to survive.

Reports on the cleanup efforts are good. Gulf beaches are back to pristine white and testing of marine life shows good eats except for Gulf oysters, which may be suspect for some time.

It will be a long time before the full environmental impact of the spill is known. Early reports of effects on wildlife seem to be better than expected.

New technologies are in the works to prevent such a spill from occurring again. This spill impacted the entire Gulf region, from Texas all the way to southern Florida. Emphasis on health has put Gulf seafood in demand. Fish offers high protein and lower fat when compared to other red meats popular with Americans. Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia also have claims against BP for damages incurred due to the oil spill.

New government regulations will bring fluorescent light bulbs into all American homes. These bulbs should save energy costs, but it is important to know how to handle them.

Florescent bulbs contain mercury, and emit a small amount of toxic gas when broken. They have to be handled with care to prevent breakage, and everyone needs to know the procedures in case one does break.

First, clear the area of everyone who isn’t cleaning it. Pets should be taken out. Never vacuum or sweep broken florescent bulbs. This will break up the mercury and spread it into the air. Close the room off from the rest of the house and open it to the outdoors. Keep it well ventilated for at least 24 hours.

Use disposable gloves to pick up all the pieces. Use cardboard to sweep up smaller pieces. Tape will help gather the smallest pieces. Wrap all the pieces of glass, mercury and anything used to clean it up in plastic.

Your local garbage facility, health department or fire department can instruct you on how to dispose of fluorescent bulbs. Do not put them in with regular garbage pickup. Some locations do not offer pickup, and you may have to take it to them for disposal. While waiting on disposal, keep them wrapped tightly in plastic and out of reach.

Keep children and pets out of the area for at least 24 hours. Make sure to check the entire floor thoroughly because mercury beads can roll a long way on flat surfaces.

Powers are available at hardware and home improvement stores that will dissolve any mercury that remains. It isn’t necessary, but it is an option.

Any fabric or clothing that comes in contact with mercury should be discarded. Never wash these items in a washing machine because the mercury will end up in the water system. Also, do not wash it down the drain.

Recycling isn’t just about what you put in the bin to be picked up every week. Recycling items in your own home can save money and even make a decorative statement.

Instead of buying planters, use items that would normally go in the recycling bin or even the garbage cans to make planters for vegetables, herbs and flowers. Egg cartons are excellent for starting seedlings. Plastic and cardboard cartons for milk and juice make good planters, especially for vegetables to be transplanted into the garden.

When washed, yogurt cups make great storage bins for anything from beauty supplies to screws or nails. Plastic fruit cups make good candidates for storage, too.

If you usually have plastic bottles around, you can use them instead of wooden rolling pins for baking. Different size bottles can also be cut and used for cookie or biscuit cutters.

Heavy plastic bottles like bleach comes in can be washed thoroughly and used for watering cans. Plastic fast food cups are great for rinsing shampoo off pets.

Empty coffee cans and plastic containers make excellent canisters. They have a good seal and will last through many uses.

Many of these items can be painted. Foil and foil type wrapping paper can give some of these items a new look if used for decorating. Many items make excellent flower vases and catch-alls for kitchen counters or other cluttered spaces.

Cereal boxes and frozen pizza boxes are easily flattened and stored for when you need to lay something down under a project. They work well for kids, crafts and even in the garage.

Always thoroughly clean recycled items before putting them to other uses. Never use items that contained hazardous chemicals for food or plants. After washing, lay them out to dry completely before using. If planting in plastic or metal, be sure to make holes for water to drain. You will need to put them somewhere safe for leaks and stains. Other recyclable items can be put under them to catch runoff water.

When it comes to using land and managing property, there isn’t a lot that’s done right. The land between rural and urban communities (the suburbs) is particularly bad at using resources correctly, because there’s so much space and not a lot being done with it. Now, some suburban homeowners are starting to use their land to grow food, compost, and produce things from the land, instead of just having a yard that they spend a lot of money each year taking care of. The suburbs in a lot of cities were designed right after the Second World War, and they haven’t really seen any kind of improvement since then. That’s unfortunate, because that property could be better managed and help out a lot more people.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re in Tampa, Seattle, or Arlington property management is a big deal and no one’s using it efficiently. The largest amount of land is being used for the least production, and that’s hurting everyone involved. There are only so many resources on the planet, and when people don’t use them efficiently they can’t help those who are struggling and those who need food and/or need to try to keep food prices lower. If you live in the suburbs, you can do your part by composting, growing some crops for your own consumption, and using your land wisely and efficiently.

It’s great that more urban residents are using their land to grow crops and do similar things, but it’s upsetting that there are so few suburban homeowners who are interested in doing those kinds of things. The ones that are doing it are helping the planet, but there just aren’t that many of them, and more are needed. You can get involved on your parcel of land, and help the planet continue to thrive.

Water treatment is expensive. Conserving water at home can mean lower water bills and a better environment. Using common sense in water conservation means you don’t have to make huge sacrifices later.

First, fix the leaky faucets. Drip, drip, drip means waste, waste, waste. If a toilet has a habit of getting stuck, have it repaired. It will be less expensive in the long run than paying the water bill if it’s left to run all day every day.

When hand washing dishes, use sink stoppers in both sides – one for washing and one for rinsing. Then you won’t have to keep the water running the whole time you wash dishes. Wait to run the dishwasher when it is entirely full. Running partial loads is a waste of money and power.

Monitor children when they are bathing, washing their hands or brushing teeth. It’s never too soon to teach children good conservations habits. Explain to them how we are trying to help the environment. That will mean more to them than another lecture on how you have to pay the bills.

Wait to run the clothes washer when it’s full or remember to adjust the load setting. You can waste many gallons of water running a small load on a high-level setting.

Be sure sprinkler systems are programmed and are running properly. Overwatering can harm plants in addition to wasting water. Observe any local watering bans that are in effect during droughts or high fire risk times. Gray water from bathtubs and runoff water can be used in these situations.

If you’re washing your car, shut the hose off while soaping. Also, make sure you’re using biodegradable soaps that won’t harm plant life or animals in the area.

When trying to conserve around the home, saving money is usually the same as saving water or other resources. Reducing waste leads to benefits all around.

Whether you are trying to save the environment or just some gas money, there are many things you can do to lessen fuel emissions and money spent at the pump.

Combine your trips. If you have to be somewhere at 3:00, don’t run to the store at 11:30. Wait and do them at the same time.

Make a mental map of your city or area. What do you pass regularly? Try to shop, buy gas, bank and do other regular business within your regular travel areas. This will mean saving gas, time and money.

Driving from store to store to capitalize on sales or coupons may not save money in the long run. When you consider the amount of gas you burn stopping and starting your car, you probably spent more money. Many stores honor coupons or match prices from other stores, allowing you to get all the savings in one stop.

Shop for a week, or even a month, at a time. Strive for one big shopping trip for each paycheck. Fewer trips to the store saves in other ways, too. You’re likely to make at least one impulse purchase every time you go. Also, if you are always fully stocked you won’t need to make a last-minute emergency run in case of bad weather.

If you use cash for certain purchases, get enough cash for a full week at one time instead of running to the bank daily. If you aren’t good at sticking to a budget, put the cash for each day or for certain purchases – like gas or groceries – in marked sealed envelopes.

Use public transportation when possible. Even if you don’t want to use it regularly, every trip saves money and reduces emissions.

Carpool. Chances are your friends, neighbors and family go many of the places you do. Riding together gives you time to catch up on conversation and save at the same time.

Being a friend to the environment doesn’t stop when you set the recycling bin out before leaving on vacation. Being friendly to the environment is as important while you’re away from home – maybe more.

If you’re traveling by car or RV, set aside bags and plenty of room for recyclable items. You won’t always be in a place that provides recycling bins, but when you find one you’ll be prepared. Most Wal-Marts have recycling bins in their entrances.

Try to pack with an environmentally friendly mind. One plastic bag might work in place of several. Washable cups for drinking are better than a case of water in plastic bottles.

If you are camping, watch what you throw in the campfire. Plastics and other materials can emit toxic chemicals when burned. Cans and other metals won’t burn completely, leaving a mess behind. Animals and people can get injured on sharp objects left in an extinguished fire.

Utensils that can be washed and reused are cheaper – and more environmentally friendly in the long run. Have a dishpan, dish detergent and washcloth instead of several boxes of plastic flatware.

One family-sized bag of chips will produce less waste than many individual packs. Bring paper towels to dispense individual servings. The same goes for other snack foods, like peanuts. Large sizes can be purchased in bulk, saving money and preventing waste.

Try to select products that are biodegradable. Sometimes it becomes a balancing act: paper uses trees but plastic isn’t biodegradable. Which will cause the most long- term effect on the environment?
